11:30 am - 12:10 pm Using Large Diameter Piles to Speed Up Construction
The terminology around large diameter bored piles is experiencing new meanings with pile diameters of approximately 3m being now used. Such large diameters can provide significant cost reductions with respect to both direct costs and construction program. However, there are specific aspects of pile performance that should be accounted for in the design and their effect on the superstructure. As part of this presentation, the following topics will be covered:

Solution clinics are designed to give participants strategies and tools to deal with their most pressing challenges. The room will split into tables, where each table member will share their biggest challenge, before collectively deciding which issue to investigate in more detail. The table will then elect a facilitator/note taker who will record the topic being explored and the ideas o the table. After 40 minutes of discussion, the facilitator of each table will then report back to the rest of the audience their problem and potential solutions.

- Data comparison of pre and post densification using RAP to measure the degree of improvement function of soil types (mainly sand and silt);
- Influence of the improvement bulb below the treatment depth;
- Influence of the replacement ratio on the degree of improvement;
- Level of improvement function of confinement for clean sand; and

The Transmission Gully project involves constructing a 27-km four-lane (two in each direction) motorway from MacKays to Linden. There will be interchanges at MacKays Crossing, SH58, eastern Porirua (James Cook), and at Kenepuru.
The project is part of the Wellington Northern Corridor and is a vital cog in the region’s transport system. It is designed to provide a critical and resilient lifeline to Wellington in the event of an earthquake or other major disruption. Importantly, it is a catalyst for local economic development.
